Yeah Gary! Some of the new RnB and breakbeat stuff that's around is very hip! I think it comes from the MPC programming, where the hihat, snare and bass are all sequenced slightly out of time with each other, so you get a wierd 'dragging' effect. Killing!
Sweep is great at that - you should ask him about it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think Sting's use of odd times is hip too in contrast to Rush's use of odd times esp. on stuff like the beginning of 'Subdivisions', 'Distant Early Warning' among others, which I thought was cool back in the day. Secretly I still enjoy listening to that stuff every now and again, but it sounds like musical training wheels(overtly stated) to my ears now.Quote:

The drummer from The Darkness is hip.
The drum n' bass stuff is awesome. I also feel Carter Bfrds stuff is great too especially when he messes with the pulse, if you get a chance to see DMB live he's the show and he's allover the place. Yes I agree sometimes he's way over the top but the guy is doing his thang and doing it well. What a great gig he has. He takes risks and works HARD every night. It's funny because I've seen the guy mess up, came in a sixteenth behind after one of his over the top Cobham licks and just as the whole band was turning around to look at him he shifted again right back into place, the mark of a real pro.

IMO, this bass and drum stuff is SO played out. I mean, how many years has it been around and I still listen to that fast typical standard weedly-weedly beat and turn it off. Once Bowie used it, it was unhip.

Anyone bagging on guys like Vinnie, Weckl, Chambers, Donati, Novak, etc, because they are accomplished players who have great technique & ideas & aren't afraid to show it when called for [AKA, Jealous Cretins because they didn't put in the time & effort to excel & don't like those others getting credit where it's due];
Anyone bagging on a player like Gadd or Ersk because they are NOT "chops guys," who often choose NOT to use their considerable "chops" often when it wouldn't serve the tune at hand [AKA, those hung up on chops];

I think the small kit deal is starting to wane itself, much as the large Titanic Exhibit kits did from the 80s...it's been around a long time, & I don't see many revolutionizing the concept in the pop-rock world...they might as well have the huge USS Triumph/Rush/Bobby Rock kit & not play it too... [img]wink.gif[/img]
Play a kit that reflects what you are going to use in the playing on any given night - if this involves a few more drums, cymbals, & spcl-FX cymbals / chimes / perc / bells & whistles [a la Carter B], then so be it.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Awesome post, that rocked.
